The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon

Two weeks ago, I shared Asian Movie Pulse’s list of The Best Chinese-Language Movies of 2024, which included The Pig, The Snake, and The Pigeon. I finally had the chance to watch it. It’s one of the rare Taiwanese films that was also released in China, and it received a warm reception from Chinese audiences. I wholeheartedly agree with those who say the movie is excellent—it truly is, with a fascinating and unconventional storyline and a few standout action sequences.

That said, if you’re an action fan, I should mention that the second half of the movie focuses less on action. It almost feels like a different film, as the pace slows down, and the story shifts from action-thriller to more of a mystery-drama. However, I found both halves of the movie equally enjoyable, offering a great opportunity to practice your Chinese listening skills. Apart from one character speaking some Cantonese, most of the characters speak Mandarin Chinese.

As usual, I’ve prepared some flashcards with key lines and vocabulary from the movie. You can save them and review them before watching the film. While watching, keep an eye out for the words and sentences on the flashcards.

If you’d like to practice these words through different games, you can also find them on my Quizlet page along with some other flashcards that I’ve created recently. I’d love to hear your feedback on how to improve both the movie and Quizlet flashcards, so they can be even more helpful to you in the future!
