Best of 2024

As we step into 2025, I’ve realized once again that I didn’t get around to watching nearly as many movies or TV shows as I’d originally planned. So today, I want to share what’s probably the best list on the Internet for anyone looking for the best Chinese-language movies—whether to practice your listening skills or simply enjoy some great films.

I’m talking about Asian Movie Pulse’s ‘The 25 Best Chinese-Language Movies of 2024’. This list is packed with many interesting titles, but unfortunately, I’ve only managed to watch Black Dog so far (which I’ve recommended before!). I also created downloadable flashcards for this movie, featuring key words and sentences you can use to practice your Chinese. Definitely check out the full list—it’s one of the best English-language resources for discovering top-notch Chinese-language films.

I also browsed Metacritic’s Top 100 Movies of 2024, where I found three Chinese-language films: Youth (which also appears on Asian Movie Pulse’s list), The Shadowless Tower, and Dìdi, a bilingual film in Chinese and English. For Dìdi, I’ve also created some flashcards to help you study vocabulary from the movie.

Here’s another end-of-the-year list with some interesting background information about this year’s Chinese box office that’s also worth checking out: Best Chinese Movies 2024 - The World of Chinese.

Since I haven’t seen most of the films recommended on various "best of" lists, I’ll share a few of my personal favorites from this year (in no particular order). Alongside Dìdi and Black Dog, I really enjoyed the Taiwanese-Japanese romantic drama 18×2 Beyond Youthful Days. Another standout was YOLO, which turned out to be quite entertaining.

If you watch only one Chinese TV show this year, make it The Long Season. With its unforgettable characters and distinctive storytelling style, it stands apart from anything else you’ll find on Chinese television.

Finally, on the gaming front, the most successful video game by a Chinese company this year was Black Myth: Wukong. It has surpassed all expectations and is featured on many year-end lists.
