Winter Sports in China (Flashcards)

China may not be widely known for its winter sports scene, but surprisingly, winter enthusiasts flock to the mountains to enjoy a variety of cold-weather activities. The northern regions (Heilongjiang 黑龙江, Jilin 吉林, Hebei 河北), in particular, with their freezing temperatures and snowy landscapes, offer ideal conditions for popular winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating.

By the end of December, the lakes in Beijing typically freeze over, making it the perfect time for winter sports. Popular spots in the city such as Shichahai (什刹海), Beihai (北海), the Summer Palace (颐和园), and Yuanmingyuan (圆明园) offer a variety of winter activities on their frozen lakes, attracting both locals and tourists.

One unique winter sport you might not have come across outside of China is Ice Sledding (滑冰车). Played on frozen lakes, this activity involves sliding on ice while riding a sled.

If you’d like to learn or practice some winter sport related vocabulary, I’ve created flashcards on Quizlet to help you memorize them through fun and interactive games. You can get access to them here: Winter Sports Flashcards.
