In today’s newsletter let me introduce you to two movies from Taiwanese director, Chung Mong-Hong. Both movies are available for streaming on Netflix.

A SUN 阳光普照

In this 2019 drama, we follow two brothers, one of whom is arrested on assault charges. Following this incident, their father attempts to distance himself from the troubled brother, leading to struggles with reintegrating into society and impacting the entire family deeply. The film navigates through various twists and turns, delving into darker themes along the way. Personally, I consider this movie one of the best, if not the best, Taiwanese films I've ever seen. It garnered several major film awards, including Best Feature Film at the Golden Horse Film Awards.

这是2019年上映的一部家庭剧情片。一对普通夫妻有两个儿子，哥哥温顺，弟弟叛逆。小儿子由于砍伤人进了少管所，被释放后一直无法融入社会生活，甚至父亲也刻意地让哥哥与他保持距离。在曲折的故事情节里导演让我们看到了人性中的善与恶，阳光与阴暗。《阳光普照》在众多的台湾电影中是数一数二的，它也曾获得金马奖的最佳剧情长片奖。

THE FALLS 瀑布

Chung Mong-Hong’s latest movie came out in 2021, and although I enjoyed A Sun a bit more than The Falls, it is still a great movie that should not be missed.

《瀑布》是钟孟宏导演的另一部作品，上映于2021年。我个人更喜欢《阳光普照》，但《瀑布》依旧是非常值得一看的好电影。

Similarly to A Sun, this drama also centers around a family, mainly a mother and daughter estranged relationship. The story takes place in the midst of the Covid pandemic in Taiwan, as the daughter is forced to quarantine at home after one of her classmates got infected with the virus, which puts an extra toll on her relationship with her mother. This way we also get a glimpse on how the pandemic could have affected people’s lives in Taiwan, which just makes the movie all the more interesting.

和《阳光普照》相似，故事围绕一对母女展开，讲述了在疫情期间紧绷的母女关系。由于同班同学确诊新冠，女儿不得不居家隔离，加上极为压抑的生活环境，母女俩人经常爆发矛盾。在这个故事里我们也可以看到疫情对台湾人民生活的影响。
