Horror Movies from Taiwan
Chinese-language horror movies still have some catching up to do compared to horror films from the rest of the world. However, now and then, a few gems surface that are worth checking out. With Halloween just around the corner, here are two horror films from Taiwan you might enjoy on a spooky Halloween night. Be warned, though - both movies are quite graphic, so if you’re not a fan of blood and gore, it’s best to give these a pass.
Mon Mon Mon Monsters
This 2017 Taiwanese horror-comedy is the more lighthearted of the two, but it’s still a rather bleak film, with many characters engaging in bullying, sometimes in disturbingly violent ways. As the title suggests, there are a few monsters in the movie, and some of the scenes featuring them can be quite tense. However, the comedic elements dilute the overall doom and gloom and occasionally feel a bit out of place. That said, I still consider it one of the better Chinese-language horror films, directed by none other than the creator of one of Taiwan’s most famous romantic comedies, You Are the Apple of My Eye.
The Sadness
The Sadness (2022) is a brutal and unrelenting Taiwanese horror film that leaves little room for relief. It explores a terrifying viral outbreak that turns infected people into sadistic monsters, driven by an uncontrollable urge to inflict violence and cruelty. It’s one of the most extreme horror films to come out of Taiwan, and if you’re a fan of intense, edge-of-your-seat horror, you won’t want to miss this one.
Goddamned Asura
And let me recommend a bonus film too, Goddamned Asura (2022), which isn’t a horror movie per se but more of a psychological drama, depicting chilling events inspired by real-life random killings. Rather than relying on blood and gore, the film delves into heavy themes, examining the troubled mind of a night market shooter and the ripple effects of his crime. Taiwan selected it as its official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, and personally, I find it to be a stronger film than the two horror movies I mentioned earlier.
