Graded Chinese Reader Recommendations

If you want to improve your Chinese through reading, I've got three awesome book series for you. Each series has different levels and word counts, and you can also use these books if you’re preparing for the HSK exams! To start your Chinese reading journey, I recommend beginning with Rainbow Bridge and Mandarin Companion, as both series have an entry-level word count of 150. Once you can read these books confidently, you can then progress to the next level, which is 300 words - the entry level for Chinese Breeze. If you’re a more advanced reader, consider checking out the higher levels of Rainbow Bridge.

Mandarin Companion Graded Readers: (18 books, 3 levels) This series adapts famous Western stories into Chinese. It’s cool because you might already know the stories, which makes reading easier. The books are available in both simplified and traditional character editions, so if you're studying traditional characters, this is the right series for you. At the end of the books, you'll find vocabulary lists with pinyin and comprehension questions for each chapter; however, the comprehension exercises in the other two book series are more versatile. Mandarin Companion Graded Readers: 这个系列一共有18本书，分为3个级别。书中将有名的西方故事改编为中文版本，在了解内容的情况下，使中文阅读变得更简单。与其他两个系列不同的是，它有简体和繁体两个版本。在书的最后附有字词表和阅读理解的问题，不过题型比较单一。（亚马逊有售）

Rainbow Bridge Graded Chinese Readers: (32 books, 7 levels) Rainbow Bridge offers a mix of traditional Chinese tales and modern stories. It’s perfect if you want to learn more about Chinese culture while improving your reading. They provide pinyin for keywords and explanations, plus comprehension questions which are probably the best out of the three book series. This series can be a bit tougher at higher levels, but it's super rewarding. (available on Amazon)

彩虹桥汉语分级读物：一共32本书，分7个级别，在这个系列的读物里既有现代故事又有中国经典的古代故事，在阅读的同时可以了解更多的中国文化。每页有关键词的英文解释和拼音，阅读理解的题目也是这三个系列里设计得最多样的。《彩虹桥》的高级别很难，不过这也代表着当你完成时会有巨大的成就感！（亚马逊有售）

Chinese Breeze Graded Reader Series: (23 books, 4 levels) The stories are fun and cover lots of different topics. You'll find vocabulary lists with pinyin at the end of the books with additional comprehension exercises. I couldn’t find this series on Amazon, but you can order it from this website: https://www.chinesebreeze.net/

汉语风分级读物：一共23本书，分4个级别。这个系列的每本书围绕不同话题讲述了有趣的故事，在书的最后有带拼音的字词表和阅读理解的练习题目。我在亚马逊没找到《汉语风》，不过在这个网站可以购买。
