Enhance Your Chinese Reading With This Free Online Tool

Today, let me introduce you to a special tool for your internet browser that can change how you learn/read Chinese on different websites and can improve your productivity. I recommend that you follow along with me through the next several steps by downloading the Zhongwen browser extension from here (if you don’t find it helpful, you can easily remove it with just a click of a button; it’s entirely free and safe to use):

This extension works in Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. Its main function is as a Chinese-English Dictionary. When activated, you can simply hover your cursor over a Chinese character on a webpage, and it will display the character’s pinyin, tones, and English definition. It can also automatically recognize if characters belong together to form a word.

这个插件适用于Google Chrome, Firefox,和Microsoft Edge. 当你在网页阅读中文文章时，只需将鼠标放在你不认识的字词上，它会显示对应的拼音和英文释义。

After installing the extension from the link above, find the extensions icon in the upper right corner of your browser. From the list, select "Zhongwen: Chinese-English Popup Dictionary". Clicking once activates the extension, allowing for translations when hovering over Chinese characters. Clicking again deactivates it. You can also remove the extension here if you no longer wish to use it. I recommend pinning it to the top of your browser for easy access.

Once you've turned on the extension, you can begin moving your cursor over any Chinese characters you don’t recognize in this newsletter (or on any other website containing Chinese characters). If you've been reading this newsletter in English but want to take your Chinese reading to the next level, I suggest switching to the Chinese part of the newsletter. Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar character, simply use the extension to translate it. There's no need to copy and paste into Google Translate anymore. Instead of translating entire sentences, you can focus on the characters you don’t recognize, thereby improving your reading ability.

This app has another great function, but it only works for Skritter users. (If you’re not familiar with Skritter, it’s one of the most popular apps for practicing Chinese character writing, but it offers other functions too.) While hovering over a Chinese character with the Zhongwen extension switched on, you can press ‘s’ on the keyboard, and the character highlighted will be automatically added to your Skritter study list, where you can review and practice these characters later.
