Today's language learning options are much more diverse than they were 20, or even just 10 years ago. If you want to immerse yourself in the Chinese language, you no longer have to travel to a Chinese-speaking country or enroll in a traditional Chinese class to practice your listening or reading skills. There are countless Chinese movies, TV shows, and songs readily available for streaming. But today, I want to talk about video games.

现如今的语言学习方式要比十几，二十几年前更加多样化。如果你想有一个沉浸式中文环境，不再需要去到一个说中文的国家或者参加传统的中文课堂。在网上可以找到无数的电影，电视剧，歌曲帮助我们练习中文。不过我们今天的话题是：中文游戏。

A quick disclaimer: I rarely play video games, so most of the information I provide in today’s newsletter is based on my research and my husband's recommendations. He is a big video game fan and considers playing video games one of the main reasons he has become fluent in English. While some people might dismiss video games as lacking educational value, my husband is living proof that they can actually help improve language skills.

进入正题之前我得说一下，我很少打游戏，所以今天的内容是通过网上调查和我老公的推荐而来的。提到游戏可能很多人首先想到的是负面影响，不过我老公完全是个正面例子，他就是通过打游戏使自己的英语得到了极大的提升。

Today’s narrative-driven games can contain more dialogue than your favorite TV shows. For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 has over 1,365,000 words and more than 140 hours of cutscenes, making it longer than all eight seasons of Game of Thrones combined. Unfortunately, Baldur’s Gate 3 only has Chinese subtitles and no Chinese audio. However, many other games do offer Chinese audio options!

其实打游戏可能比看电视剧有更多机会练习语言，比如《博德之门3》 这个游戏，它包含1365000个字词和140小时的过场对话，这个时长甚至比八季的《权力的游戏》更久。虽然《博德之门3》只有中文的字幕，不包含音频，但还有很多游戏是有中文音频的。

To start, I’ll recommend three games developed by Chinese studios that are deeply connected to Chinese culture and mythology, followed by two games from Japanese companies. At the end of today’s newsletter, I will list other narrative-driven games that you can play with Chinese audio and subtitles if you choose to do so.

Black Myth: Wukong

This is the newest video game in today’s list, and it’s coming out on August 20. It is an action RPG inspired by the classic novel, Journey to the West. It looks like it could be one of the year's major releases from a Chinese game company, so I might check it out when it comes out and I write a bit more about it in an upcoming newsletter.

《黑神话：悟空》是今天所有游戏中最新的一个，它将在8月20日上线，以小说《西游记》为背景。这可能是今年最受关注的中文游戏之一，有机会的话，我会在以后的推文中详细聊一聊。

Swords of Legends 1-3

《古剑奇谭1-3》

Another RPG set in a fictionalized Ancient China and rooted in Chinese mythology is the Swords of Legends series. It's considered one of the best Chinese RPG series, with each new episode improving upon the last. There's even a popular Chinese TV show based on these games. The games were released in 2010, 2013, and 2018.

《古剑奇谭》以中国神话为背景，它被认为是中国最好的角色扮演游戏之一，共三个版本，分别上线于2010，2013和2018年。由于游戏广受欢迎，根据它改编的同名电视剧也在2014年播出。

Genshin Impact

《原神》

Released in September 2020, Genshin Impact is an RPG set in a fantasy world, featuring anime-style graphics. It's one of the most successful Chinese video games ever created.

《原神》是在2020年的秋天发布的，是一款开放世界冒险的角色扮演游戏，画面为动漫风格，也是迄今为止最成功的中文游戏之一。

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

《卧龙：苍天陨落》

This 2023 action RPG, created by a Japanese company, is also based on Chinese mythology. It takes place during a fictionalized version of the fall of the Han Dynasty, right before the Three Kingdoms period.

这部游戏发布于2023年，它是由日本公司推出的以中国历史为背景的奇幻类动作角色扮演游戏，游戏中的故事开始于三国时代之前的东汉末年。

Total War: Three Kingdoms

《全面战争：三国》

Finally, let's include a turn-based strategy game by another Japanese company. Total War: Three Kingdoms, released in 2019, is set during the fall of the Han Dynasty and the rise of the Three Kingdoms period, a time of immense upheaval and war in Chinese history.

《全面战争：三国》是由另一家日本公司开发的回合制战略游戏。它于2019年上线，背景设定在汉朝末期和三国时期，这是中国历史上一个战争频发的时代。

If you're into video games, I hope some of these titles have caught your interest enough to give them a try. As you might notice, many Chinese (and Japanese) game developers often explore similar themes, with many games set in or around the Three Kingdoms period and featuring elements of Chinese mythology.
